We are delighted to introduce Melissa Goodman as a new instructor for the Institute of Venue Safety and Security (IVSS) this year. With extensive experience in venue management and a deep commitment to safety and security, Mel brings invaluable insights to our program.

Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Mel about her background and vision for IVSS:

Introduce yourself and provide some background on your experience in the field of venue safety and security.

I have been a member of the venue team at Sydney Showground for 15 years, managing all aspects of event and venue operations for a variety of concerts, dance parties, exhibitions, and conferences. Currently, as the Head of Events & Venue Operations, I am deeply committed to crowd safety and management, with a strong passion for developing and implementing security measures to enhance patron experiences with the support of key stakeholders.

I have over 25 years of experience in the major event industry, with the past 4 years dedicated specifically to venue safety and security.

What specific session will you be leading in the IVSS program, and what key insights or skills do you hope students will gain from your session?

In the IVSS program, I will be leading a session focused on comprehensive venue security management – Security Operations: Facility. The session will delve into critical aspects such as planning for ‘last mile’ security, understanding and implementing a defence in depth strategy, and managing key venue security elements. I will also cover the intricacies of liquor licensing and responsible service of alcohol regulations, crowd management principles, and the effective management of contracted security services.

Through my experiences, I aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively plan and manage security operations for major events in a facility, ensuring safety and compliance with relevant regulations.

What are your thoughts on the current state of safety and security in the venue management industry, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

The current state of safety and security in the venue management industry is both challenging and rapidly evolving. With increasing threats and incidents globally, there is a heightened awareness and emphasis on security measures. Venues are now more focused on comprehensive risk assessments, advanced technologies, and stringent regulatory compliance to ensure the safety of attendees and their staff.

Looking ahead, I see the industry continuing to evolve with advancements in technology playing a crucial role. We can expect more widespread use of AI and machine, biometric screening for secure and efficient access control, and enhanced communication systems for real-time coordination during events. Additionally, there will be a growing emphasis on sustainable and adaptable security practices that can be tailored to the specific needs of different events and venues.

Why do you believe it is important for professionals in the industry to attend the IVSS program, and what unique benefits do you think it offers?

I believe it is a career benefit for professionals in the industry to attend the IVSS program because it allows venue professionals to gain cutting-edge knowledge, develop practical skills, and build a robust network of industry contacts, ultimately enhancing their expertise and advancing their careers in venue safety and security

Lastly, how do you feel about being a part of the IVSS program as an instructor, and what excites you the most about this opportunity?

I am thrilled to be a part of the IVSS program as an instructor. This opportunity excites me because it allows me to share my extensive experience and passion for venue safety and security with a new generation of professionals. Contributing to the growth and development of the industry is incredibly fulfilling, and I am eager to inspire and mentor others.
