The 27th edition of Asia-Pacific Venue Industry Congress has wrapped up this week in Melbourne, having brought together over 400 venue industry professionals from Australia, NZ, Asia and the USA for 3 days of learning, networking and celebrating our industry.
The feature packed program included over 50 international and domestic speakers across 23 sessions, numerous social and networking functions and our industry’s night of nights – the Venue Industry Awards and Gala Dinner.
Returning by popular demand was NZ entertainer, comedian and TV host Jeremy Corbett as our hard working MC bringing his own unique style to the event.
With a theme of Innovate & Adapt our speakers across all sessions were on point in sharing world’s best practice and practical take back to venue tips on innovation and adaption across all areas of our industry – from catering and ticketing, IT and software solutions, risk and safety and emerging technology and opportunities including drones, facial recognition, dog detection and behavioural analysis.
Our key note speakers included Dylan Alcott OAM who inspired and entertained the delegates with his story, passion and drive to improve our industry through tackling accessibility issues in venues; international terrorism expert Chris Phillips brought home the reality and ever present horror of terrorism and how our venues are front and centre of that threat; and Peter Williams, leading futurist from Deloitte Centre for the Edge, gave us an insight into emerging technologies that will play a significant part in our industry in the coming years.
Our promotor’s panel brought together a stellar line up of industry legends and our closing debate proved a highlight with the panel member’s honesty and forthright commentary on our major codes and venue development debate featuring Peter Fitzsimons, Todd Greenberg, Larry Kestelman, Kate Roffey and moderated by Hamish McLachlan.
The exhibition trade floor featured close to 40 industry leading suppliers showcasing their goods and services and is the only industry event in the region that brings key venue decision makers together on mass in one place. With all day catering and a number of social and product activation events taking place on the floor we are confident that it has generated both significant business outcomes and a great ROI for our exhibitors again.

To conclude the Congress program we hosted our Gala Dinner where we paid tribute to our 2019 Venue Industry Award winners in Gary Mears CVE, Paul McCarthy and Eray Saban. We recognised and announced our second Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in Cliff Wallace CVE and we congratulated those members that achieved their industry certifications across both AVM and CVE. To all those involved in the organisation and participation in the Congress and the Gala Dinner, the VMA expresses our sincere thanks and appreciation and in wrapping the event the VMA welcomed the industry to join us at The Star, Gold Coast as the 2020 Congress location to be held between 17th and 19th May 2020.
